R is for Routines

Have you ever had one of those days where you feel off your game? I felt that way this morning. I had a lot of things on my to-do list and it just seemed to keep getting longer. I felt so overwhelmed that I didn’t know where to start.

So I used some tips from and refreshed my routines. I spent some time this morning deciding what I needed to accomplish every day–things like laundry, dishes, picking up toys, and working out–and put them into lists for a Morning Routine, Afternoon Routine, and Before Bed Routine.

Then I put them into sheet protectors and a notebook. Then I knew where to start and could, essentially, start my day over. I crossed off things from my Morning Routine as I accomplished them with a dry erase marker, so I can erase it tonight and start over again in the morning. These routines help to get my mind running in the right direction each day so that I can keep up with housework and music therapy work and not have to think about it. I just check the list and do whatever is next.

Each routine takes 15 minutes or less to accomplish, so then I feel like my house cleans itself and that I’ve accomplished things. My mind is freed up to play with my kid or attend to my work, whichever is needed that day.

With summer coming, my schedule is changing soon, so I thought about how I can set up my routines so I can be successful during the transition to summer “break”.

How are you refreshing your routines for the summer?
