About Me

I’m Janice Lindstrom, a board certified music therapist with over 15 years of experience using music to help adults and children work on motor skills, cognition, communication, and wellness. I’ve worked in hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, nursing homes, schools, and home health care. I currently maintain a private practice in Dallas, TX offering music therapy and adapted piano and guitar lessons. I have met many moms and dads who are overwhelmed with caring for their child who has a learning, neurological, or developmental disability. My passion is to help parents make their lives easier, and more fun, by connecting with their child through musical play. We all know that music is essential for healthy brain development, but I know busy parents may not know where to start. So my mission is to provide resources that parents can easily use during their day to offer that musical stimulation that is so important for our children.

Introduction: Advocacy –> Recognition –> Access

Since 2005, the American Music Therapy Association and the Certification Board for Music Therapists have collaborated on a State Recognition Operational Plan. The primary purpose of this plan is to get music therapy and our MT-BC credential recognized by individual states so that citizens can more easily access our services. The AMTA Government Relations staff and CBMT Regulatory Affairs staff provide guidance and technical support to state task forces throughout the country as they work towards state recognition. To date, their work has resulted in over 35 active state task forces, 2 licensure bills passed in 2011, 1 licensure bill passed in 2012, and an estimated 7 bills being filed in 2013 that seek to create either title protection or a licensure for music therapy. This month, our focus is on YOU and on getting you excited about advocacy.

What is Advocacy?

Advocacy is for anyone. Advocacy happens everywhere, any day of the week, any time you are engaging in a professional capacity. You can advocate at every level, from grassroots in your community to state agencies and governors to national legislators. In fact, any opportunity and conversation is a way to advocate for the profession.

Advocacy also happens within our profession–as when you talk to a person trained in music therapy about board certification. Plus, the skills needed to be an advocate are skills you already have, since you already advocate for your clients, your employment, and your pay.

Advocacy is a language. You need to know your audience and tailor your advocacy skills for that audience. It’s just like tailoring your clinical skills for different clinical populations. Don’t forget that experience is the best teacher–having your audience experience music therapy firsthand is very powerful.

What is the State Recognition Operational Plan and why is it important to music therapy?

The State Recognition Operational Plan is a national initiative being implemented jointly by CBMT and AMTA to obtain state recognition of music therapy and the MT-BC credential. This collaborative effort between AMTA Government Relations staff and CBMT Regulatory Affairs staff provides guidance and technical support to state task forces throughout the country as groups of music therapists work toward recognition as defined by their particular state.

The plan involves increasing awareness of the music therapy profession and of what it means to be board-certified. The ultimate goal is that, in all situations, the MT-BC be a minimum requirement as a service provision in every work setting.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INVOLVEMENT!

We are wrapping up Social Media Advocacy Month on January 25 by talking with Michael Ricucci and Michelle Murphy Akaras of Terra Rising Records. They are creating a documentary on the power of music in education and therapy, making the case for keeping music education in schools and for music therapy as an essential medical treatment.

CONNECT with Music Therapy

Our theme for this year is CONNECT:

C = Cooperation

O = Objective

N = Nurture

N = Nuance

E = Exchange

C = Coordination

T = Timing

How do you feel these relate to advocacy, to our ability to connect with our legislative and state agency officials, as well as our community and grassroots supporters?

On January 18, I’ll ask these questions of Brian Abrams and Karen Goodman, also about the music therapy program at Montclair. The Music Therapy training program at Montclair State University is one of the oldest (1969) and foremost training programs in this country. It features closely supervised clinical work each semester, which takes place at both highly reputable local facilities as well as schools, nursing homes and hospitals in New York City. In addition, the program offers a Music Therapy Training Group, Introduction to Guided Imagery and Music, an on-campus music therapy clinic, and specialized courses in piano accompaniment and clinical improvisation. Guest clinicians from the U.S. and other countries frequently make presentations and give workshops. In the past, the following guest clinicians offered workshops and lectures to our students: Clive Robbins, Clare O’Callaghan (Australia), and Elaine Streeter (Great Britain).

The MSU Music Therapy program is the only program in the state of New Jersey for educating music therapists and one of the most competitively priced undergraduate and graduate program in the tri-state metropolitan New York City area. All students who have completed this program have found positions.

This week, I’ll be talking with Victoria Storm from Oak Park Music Therapy about why she loves music therapy.

Oak Park Music Therapy is based in a client-centered model; clients are served through a process of assessment, treatment/educational planning, intervention, and evaluation. Services are provided by a Board Certified Music Therapist to a variety of clientele. Home-based individual sessions, contractual arrangements with local facilities, and community based creativity workshops are the core of our offerings.

Our Music Therapist - Victoria Storm, MM, MT-BC uses the transformative power of music to assist people to gain new insights through the metaphors inherent in non-verbal and symbolic self expression. Using the elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, tempo, and dynamics) along with lyrics and story, Victoria customizes every session specifically for the needs of each client she sees.

Her clinical background includes 20 years of bringing music to persons in need through her work in a community music school, special education classrooms, physical and mental health hospitals, and elder care facilities. Her Master and Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Therapy are from Western Michigan University.

Victoria is a singer/songwriter, forever dedicated to the healing power of music.

He is assistant professor of music therapy at SUNY New Paltz. He graduated from Hartt College of Music and went on to complete an MM at the Manhattan School of Music. Later, as a member of the faculty at MSM, he received the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts Teacher Recognition Award. After two decades of work in settings ranging from Broadway theatre productions, to Grammy Award-winning recording studio work, to Monte Carlo, to Carnegie Hall, John eventually became interested in the possibilities inherent in music as a therapeutic medium and he attended New York University to complete a Masters Degree in Music Therapy. After earning postgraduate clinical certification in both the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and Analytical Music Therapy approaches, he joined the staff at the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Center at NYU, where he works with children, adolescents, and adults. He has presented and taught nationally and internationally.
